Overview

The Australian Council of Graduate Research (ACGR) recognises outstanding contributions to graduate research through its national Excellence Awards. We were engaged to produce a series of profile videos that spotlighted each award recipient. These videos were presented at the awards ceremony, offering a deeper insight into the achievements and research journeys of the winners.

The Approach

Our goal was to produce engaging and informative videos that captured the essence of each researcher’s work. Interviews were conducted on location, allowing us to film recipients within their real-world research settings. This added a personal, authentic layer to each video and helped contextualise their stories visually.

We used a two-camera setup throughout production, giving each video a dynamic, polished feel. This approach allowed us to alternate between angles and incorporate supportive B-roll, enhancing both narrative and visual interest. Clear pre-production planning ensured smooth coordination with institutions and researchers around Australia.

For award recipients located internationally, we used Riverside’s remote interview technology to capture professional-quality video and audio. This allowed us to maintain high production standards while including everyone involved, regardless of location.

The Challenge

With recipients based in multiple locations and time zones, flexibility and communication were key. We worked closely with each university and awardee to schedule interviews and plan each shoot to match the tone and timeframe of the ceremony. By staying agile and well-organised, we delivered consistent quality across a diverse set of locations and technical setups.

Outcome

The final videos were played during the ACGR Excellence Awards Ceremony and were well-received by both organisers and attendees. Each profile helped bring the recipients’ work to life and provided an engaging way to celebrate their impact. The videos also continue to serve as valuable promotional content beyond the event.
